“The Sound of Shovels” is a design project centered on post-disaster action and collective memory. Using the sound of shovels as a symbolic element, the work documents the process of clearing mud and rebuilding homes after the landslide-dammed lake disaster in Mataian, Guangfu, Hualien. Each sound of a shovel striking the ground marks the beginning of a story, and an act of recovery.
In the aftermath, a phrase spread across social media—“come find a household to play in the mud with”—prompting a large number of volunteers to travel to Guangfu and assist in cleanup efforts, revealing a genuine and heartwarming spirit of mutual aid in Taiwanese society.
Through documentary photography, line-based illustrations, and the character “Shovel Heroes,” the project organizes the stories and emotions found at the disaster site. Rather than focusing solely on the disaster itself, the project highlights human action, warmth, and resilience.
