Hope and Lament

Hope and Lament

Our work, Hope and Elegy, is a sculpture series that presents marine conservation issues through wood carving. By portraying a sea turtle breaking out of its shell and a sperm whale struggling in the ocean, we create a striking contrast that symbolizes the intersection of life and death, reflecting the current state and crisis of marine ecosystems.
The concept behind our design stems from a deep concern for marine pollution. The hatching sea turtle represents hope—it breaks free from its shell, ready to embrace the ocean, signifying the beginning of new life. In contrast, the struggling sperm whale on the other side, suffering from environmental degradation and pollution, is inspired by the shocking 2004 "whale explosion" incident in Tainan, Taiwan. This tragedy underscores the threats faced by marine life today. The juxtaposition of these two scenes highlights the paradox and conflict within our ecosystem: even as new life emerges, pollution and destruction persist, allowing both hope and elegy to coexist in the same ocean.
After extensive discussions, we chose wood as our primary material. The natural texture and warmth of wood not only imbue the sculpture with a deeper sense of vitality but also align with our artistic vision—wood symbolizes life, and the continuation of life is the core message we wish to convey.
This piece is not just a sculpture but a warning. Through art, we hope to make viewers reflect: as human development relentlessly encroaches upon nature, how many lives are silently lost? Can we still make a change while hope remains? Hope and Elegy is more than a visual dialogue—it is a call to reconsider the future of our oceans.
