June 25, 1986 – Zhongying Building Fire: A firefighter collapsed after inhaling excessive carbon dioxide due to insufficient air cylinder pressure.
March 15, 1994 – Hawaii Massage Parlor Fire: A firefighter became trapped due to low oxygen levels in the air cylinder and was pronounced dead after being rescued.
June 30, 2021 – Joyu Building Quarantine Hotel Fire: A firefighter took refuge in a windowless room while awaiting rescue but suffered from oxygen depletion in the air cylinder.
May 27, 2024 – Hsinchu Sky Tower Fire: A firefighter’s air cylinder ran out, triggering a distress signal. They were found unresponsive and later pronounced dead at the hospital.
In the past, many firefighters have faced life-threatening situations—or even lost their lives—due to breathing equipment failures or the inability to detect their physiological conditions in time. High-pressure and overload environments in fire scenes can cause air cylinders to deplete prematurely, with consumption rates varying by up to twice depending on the situation. Furthermore, firefighters risk having their face masks covered by oil stains, leading to disorientation and the inability to evacuate in time, resulting in tragic outcomes.
To address these issues, we have designed a pop-up system composed of multiple polyimide modules. By pressing a button on the side of the face mask, the first latch shifts, releasing the elastic force stored under pressure between the modules, which automatically ejects the first layer. Simultaneously, a second latch moves forward to block the remaining modules. When the firefighter’s vision becomes obstructed, this cycle can be repeated to ensure a clear line of sight, enhancing safety and improving their ability to navigate hazardous environments.
