“Recognizing Herbs Through Scent” uses smell as a starting point to rediscover traditional Chinese medicinal herbs. By integrating sensory experience with visual design, it creates a more accessible and engaging way to learn herbal culture. The project selects 36 common herbs, organizing their scents, colors, and knowledge into a cohesive system that connects with contemporary life.
It develops three products—coasters, a calendar, and scent bottles—forming an interconnected design system. Users are first attracted by the coasters’ visuals, then gain knowledge through the calendar, and finally build deeper sensory memory through the scent bottles, creating a gradual learning experience.
Through this approach, the project reinterprets herbal knowledge—often seen as distant and specialized—into a lighter, more visual, and approachable form, allowing people to better perceive, understand, and remember its cultural value in everyday life.
