The formation of Houyi Village in Chiayi is closely connected to the railway. In the past, the intersection of sugar railways and the main trunk line often caused level crossings to close for up to fifteen minutes due to train scheduling. This moment, known as the “Disappearing Fifteen Minutes,” became a shared pause for waiting, interaction, and everyday life, gradually shaping settlements that depended on the railway.
With the ongoing railway elevation project and urban renewal, these communities now face the possibility of being forgotten. Yet the traces of struggle, memory, and local stories embedded in Houyi Village should not disappear alongside urban transformation. This project selects four key sites to extend their existing roles and reconnect them through a breathing path inspired by the Disappearing Fifteen Minutes. Along this route, each space acts as a narrator of time, allowing memory, exchange, and pause to continue within the changing city.
