PPPRINTA : Elastic Tension Shaping Study

PPPRINTA : Elastic Tension Shaping Study

Design Concept
This project moves beyond traditional FDM prototyping by integrating the tension of elastic fabrics. By printing patterns onto pre-stretched textiles, 2D graphics are transformed into 3D units. This approach achieves organic curves that contrast with the typical aesthetic of FDM, exploring the potential of digital craft through minimal material usage.
Process Method
The process involves printing planar patterns onto stretched elastic fabric. When the tension is released, the printed regions exert localized control over the textile, inducing natural folds and 3D geometries. Based on this principle, I further tested how fabric elasticity, print layer thickness, and frame constraints influence the resulting curvature. By assembling these modular printed units, a series of lighting fixtures was developed, using light to accentuate the unique textures and diverse forms created by the fabric's contraction.
