Modern society’s heavy reliance on electronic devices has led to a decline in interpersonal relationships and personal well-being. In particular, the phenomenon of "smartphone babysitting" has contributed to children's growing dependence on mobile devices. New Door Gods extends the cultural significance of traditional door gods by addressing the issue of excessive smartphone use. Designed as digital door gods, this project challenges conventional perceptions of door gods while preserving their traditional protective role. These digital guardians foster interaction with users and connect the concept of door gods with the 24 solar terms, offering a unique experience based on the characteristics of each of the 24 digital door gods.
This project integrates traditional door gods with electronic devices, adapting to modern habits through animated visuals and an interactive application interface. It transforms static imagery into an engaging, dynamic experience, creating a new type of door god that merges cultural heritage with digital time management. Every hour, the New Door God appears on the screen of a smartphone (or other electronic device) to remind users to take a break. If any interaction with the device is detected, the break timer resets, ensuring that users are mindful of their screen time. Each of the 24 digital guardians showcases a unique and entertaining persona, making the digital protector not only functional but also engaging. This design allows children to naturally encounter traditional cultural knowledge during their breaks, fostering an awareness of the 24 solar terms in a subtle yet impactful way.
As a vital part of folk culture and art, door gods have gradually faded from daily life due to changing times. To address modern habits, enhance social interactions, and reduce children's excessive screen time, this project brings door gods closer to contemporary lifestyles. By seamlessly integrating them into daily routines, New Door Gods revives the cultural significance of door gods, reintroducing their protective presence in a way that resonates with today's society.
