Echoes of Ash
When culture is consumed by the ravages of war, how do we safeguard memory and make culture visible? This design reenacts the air raid process through "ignition, burning, and extinction," reconstructing this experience and inviting people to confront the wounds of history while reflecting on the value of peace.
During World War II, U.S. air raids relentlessly bombarded Japanese-ruled Taiwan for six months. Keelung Post Office and other landmarks were devastated, and with them, countless fragments of history faded into obscurity. Echoes of Ash revives these memories through three stages of an air raid: Ignite, Burn, and Extinguish.
AN-M69 Incendiary Bomb Matchbox – Ignite
The AN-M69 incendiary bomb carried 38 bomblets, so this matchbox contains 37 black matches and one white match. According to research, Keelung was bombed for 37 days. Each black match represents a day of destruction, while the lone white match symbolizes the war’s end and the arrival of peace.
Air Raid Candle – Burn
As the candle flickers, its firelight casts shadows onto the glass, revealing haunting scenes from the Keelung air raids and bringing long-buried history back into the light.
Post Office Candle Holder – Extinguish
The once-iconic dome of Keelung Post Office was destroyed in the bombings. This candle holder restores its silhouette, symbolizing both destruction and the resilience of rebuilding.
Wrapped in cloth using traditional Japanese techniques, the design resembles a wartime parcel, drawing the viewer into the chaos of the Keelung air raids the moment it is unwrapped. Through fire and light, Echoes of Ash narrates Keelung’s transformation from devastation to renewal, urging us to remember history, reflect on its impact, and cherish the fragility of peace.
