This project reflects on the environmental burden of traditional funeral practices, questioning the reliance on burning and formalized rituals in the face of farewell. Through an immersive pop-up book, conventional ceremonies are reinterpreted as forms of emotional expression that can be written, remembered, and personally chosen. It guides users to reconsider the cultural meanings and psychological needs behind rituals, and to explore ways of saying goodbye that align more closely with their own values. We believe that when emotions are acknowledged in advance, dependence on rituals can transform, allowing sustainable choices to emerge naturally.
The butterfly serves as the central symbol, representing the soul’s transformation from body to another state of existence. In Mexico’s Day of the Dead, monarch butterflies are seen as returning spirits, symbolizing movement between darkness and light, further enriching the project’s reflection on life and farewell.
