Cultural Kitchen – A Rice Husk Recrafted Rice Scoop, Carrying Infinite Blessings in Every Bite.
In Taiwan’s culinary culture, traditional rice cake molds (guò mó) are not just tools for making delicacies; they also carry blessings and auspicious meanings passed down through generations. Inspired by the intricate patterns of these molds, this project reuses recycled rice husks to design five unique rice scoops, each embodying well-wishes such as longevity, abundance, and prosperity. By integrating traditional symbolism into everyday dining, we bring cultural heritage beyond festive rituals and into modern life, making it a seamless part of daily routines.
Designed with both practicality and sustainability in mind, the rice scoop features a self-standing structure and a non-stick surface, enhancing user convenience. Complemented by recyclable and eco-friendly packaging, this product embodies the principles of green design, catering to contemporary consumers who value culture, aesthetics, and sustainability. The use of recycled carbon-based rice husks helps reduce agricultural waste and plastic consumption, lowering environmental impact. Additionally, the packaging is made from recycled paper, aligning with the circular design principles of low carbon, material reduction, and recyclability.
The packaging design draws inspiration from traditional guò mó patterns, integrating cutouts and white ink symbols to create a visual effect where the rice scoop appears as an imprint within the mold. This unique approach highlights the beauty of cultural craftsmanship while maintaining a minimalist yet layered aesthetic. The one-piece structural design minimizes material waste, seamlessly blending sustainability with artistry.
Cultural Kitchen is more than just a kitchen utensil—it is a meaningful dialogue between culture, sustainability, and design. By repurposing rice husks and reinterpreting traditional rice cake patterns, this rice scoop not only carries beauty and blessings but also allows culture to flow effortlessly through daily life. Every meal becomes an opportunity to share and savor the infinite blessings embedded in each bite.
