In modern society, discussions about gold paper culture often revolve around its environmental impact, focusing on ways to reduce or replace the tradition while overlooking its deep historical and cultural significance. True sustainability is not about eliminating traditions but about striking a balance—preserving the spiritual essence of gold paper while finding innovative ways to integrate it into contemporary life.
Our "Fuqian Set" and "Fuyin Zine" are inspired by this cultural heritage. We extract the gold and silver foil elements from traditional joss paper and reimagine talismanic symbols through modern typography. Using vivid colors and printmaking-inspired techniques, we depict deities with a bold, artistic approach, set against a black background that adds a sense of solemnity and reverence. This fusion breathes new life into traditional beliefs. Each "Fuqian" set includes a mountain-shaped incense holder and a specially crafted incense. As the smoke rises, it carries thoughts and prayers to distant realms. Fuqian can also be paired with red envelopes as a meaningful gift—while different in form, both serve as carriers of blessings and well-wishes. The packaging features a black-toned design with an opening mechanism that requires lighting the paper with a match. The spreading flame symbolizes our connection to the ritual of burning joss paper, creating a bridge between past and present.
"Fuyin Zine" is a visually immersive book that explores Taiwan’s gold paper culture through a blend of imagery and text. By weaving together joss paper and storytelling, the book invites readers to experience the depth of history and reverence within this tradition. The bookbinding features an exposed spine with dual-sized volumes, symbolizing the layered nature of gold paper customs. The cover incorporates gold and silver foil, representing a dialogue between tradition and modernity. Inside, readers will find insights into the origins, craftsmanship, and connection between gold paper and the Jia-Ma (paper effigy) culture, along with a curated collection of over 40 types of real joss paper, turning the book into a cultural exhibition in itself. The packaging is crafted from coarse hemp paper, punctuated with burn marks and tied with rush grass, evoking memories of ancient rituals and craftsmanship. Through innovative design, we present this culture of blessings and remembrance in a new light, allowing it to continue shinin..
