Fragile Signals

《Fragile Signals》

Fragile Signals

In the digital age, watching has become a form of power that influences and shapes individual behavior. Michel Foucault's Panopticon theory reveals that when individuals become aware of the possibility of constant surveillance, they internalize external norms and regulate themselves accordingly. Shoshana Zuboff, in Surveillance Capitalism, further argues that digital platforms exploit this power of observation, turning user behavior into data for extraction and manipulation. Fragile Signals is a deep reflection on this phenomenon, using visuals, AI technology, and immersive experiences to expose the fragile and distorted power dynamics between the observer and the observed, while critically examining how social media manipulates individuals between exposure and control.

The work places the audience inside an immersive projection space, positioning them as victims of online sexual violence who engage with social media and fall into digital entrapment. As online users spread their information, driven by internet traffic and public attention, the individual gradually unveils their private self, eventually being reshaped by AI-generated imagery into an object of gaze, judgment, and even violation. By utilizing webcam-based motion tracking, the audience’s image is captured, reassembled by AI, and projected into the exhibition space, creating an overwhelming sense of being watched. This dynamic visual effect simulates the impact of online violence, allowing participants to personally experience how self-image spirals out of control in the digital realm, becoming a commodity for public consumption.

Within this system of the economy of attention, the boundary between voluntary exposure and passive manipulation becomes increasingly blurred. Under the operational logic of social media, individuals gradually internalize the need to be seen, ultimately conforming to algorithmic and data-driven attention mechanisms. This phenomenon aligns with Foucault’s concept of self-disciplining power, where digital surveillance no longer relies on external coercion but instead encourages individuals to willingly participate in maintaining their own visibility through platform design. Through this immersive experience, Fragile Signals prompts the audience to reflect on their behavioral patterns in social media and recognize how invisible surveillance shapes self-identity and decision-making.

Beyond exposing the mechanisms of digital sexual violence, Fragile Signals critiques h..
