Miss liminality

Miss liminality

Black-and-white thinking draws boundaries to distinguish everything we perceive; it is also one of humanity’s survival mechanisms. We are accustomed to understanding the world in stark contrasts, as if only by defining things as either black or white can we maintain a sense of control. However, many aspects of life lack clear demarcations. How do we define the precise moment between life and death? Where is the boundary between existence and disappearance? How do we separate the future from the present? These ambiguous states evoke unease, yet they are an unavoidable part of our lives.

The gray area represents tension, ambiguity, and uncertainty—things people often choose to ignore. Its vagueness makes it difficult to make clear judgments; its uncertainty provokes anxiety. Psychological research shows that the brain’s preference for clarity stems from a physiological fear of the unknown. However, when we rely too much on the security that certainty brings, we overlook the possibilities that ambiguity holds.

This exhibition takes "The Ambiguity of Boundaries" as its core, inviting audiences to experience the fluidity and indistinct nature of boundaries through immersive interactions.

Dreams serve as the artistic medium for this exhibition, as they embody ambiguity, floating between reality and illusion. Inspired by the three primary colors—red, yellow, and blue—we construct three distinct dreamscapes, each centered around a core emotion. Through color and spatial design, we explore the nuances of emotional shifts. These colors are not fixed but subtly change in response to interaction, symbolizing that emotions and cognition are not binary opposites but fluid spectrums filled with transitions and possibilities.
