Dream Weaver

Dream Weaver

This project integrates Yuanli rush weaving techniques with botanical dyeing craftsmanship, employing Feather Weaving and Net Weaving to create intricate light and shadow effects. The application of indigo and cochineal dyeing further accentuates Hakka cultural aesthetics. Once a flourishing craft in Taiwan, Yuanli rush weaving has gradually declined due to the rise of plastic and industrial materials, diminishing market demand and placing cultural transmission at risk. This design seeks to transform rush weaving from a traditional household craft into a refined lighting fixture that seamlessly blends aesthetics with functionality, ensuring its relevance in contemporary interiors while revitalizing its cultural significance and economic viability.

The lamp’s structural inspiration is derived from Hakka architecture, with its shade incorporating Feather and Net Weaving techniques to mimic the light-diffusing properties of traditional lattice windows. This interplay of woven patterns enriches the illumination with layered depth, enhancing the ambient atmosphere. The color scheme, achieved through natural indigo and cochineal dyes, reinforces regional identity, with blue symbolizing stability and heritage while red represents vitality and cultural resilience. The use of sustainable materials is central to this project, as residual rush grass from the weaving process is finely ground and incorporated into the lamp’s handles and decorative elements, exemplifying a zero-waste approach. Furthermore, the modular design allows for detachable components, extending the product’s lifespan, improving adaptability across various settings, and reducing material waste, aligning with circular economy principles.

By collaborating with local artisans, this project not only preserves an endangered craft but also fosters an appreciation for rush weaving among younger generations. More than just a lighting fixture, it embodies the fusion of cultural heritage and contemporary design, aligning with Cradle-to-Cradle principles and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. By ensuring the continuous evolution of Yuanli rush weaving within a sustainable framework, this project achieves a dual objective: the preservation of intangible cultural heritage and the advancement of environmental consciousness in product design.
