The Climate Crisis and the Sustainable Training Center for Woodworking
Global warming has reached a critical point, and Taiwan’s climate crisis is more pressing than ever. In recent years, the internationally recognized goal of net-zero carbon emissions has gained increasing attention, with carbon reduction, carbon sequestration, and circular economy principles playing vital roles.
This study focuses on our department, aiming to establish a Sustainable Training Center that integrates low-carbon architecture, sustainable education, and post-training employment opportunities while combining scientific knowledge with cultural heritage.
The center adopts circular economy principles, utilizing resource reuse and material recycling to minimize carbon emissions and ensure the continuous utilization of resources throughout the building’s lifecycle. Through international skills competitions, the center serves as a platform for young talents and traditional craftsmen to exchange expertise, demonstrating the value of woodworking in sustainability and the circular economy. This initiative fosters the sustainable development of the timber industry while strengthening young generations' awareness of environmental conservation and resource efficiency.
A key architectural feature of the center is its stepped slope site with two levels of elevation gain. Inspired by the spirit of "Worker" , "Craftsman" , "Master" , and "Home" , the center is divided into four main areas:
Factory – for woodworking and skill exchange
Stepped Classroom & Exhibition Hall – for teaching and public engagement
Grand Courtyard & Residential Space – symbolizing spirit and a welcoming home
These four zones form the foundation for promoting woodworking culture, enhancing vocational training, and cultivating highly skilled professionals through interactive learning. This project integrates circular economy, sustainable education, woodworking heritage, and post-training career development, offering an innovative approach to addressing climate challenges and advancing environmental sustainability.
