The work is set in a warm, 2D animation style and tells the story of a little girl with a scar on her face, who feels insecure and is ostracized by her classmates. On her daily walk home from school, she passes a shop selling small fish. One day, she notices a small black fish in the tank, which has a scar like hers and a damaged tail. Because of its unappealing color, it has been unsold for many days.
As she watches the fish, the shopkeeper passes by, carrying a bucket of water, and the sound of water pouring from the alley catches her attention. She finds the little black fish lying weakly in the gutter, having escaped from the tank. Not knowing what to do, she picks up the fish. The street performer who had been handing out balloons a few days ago appears again. He fills his hat with water and suggests she place the fish inside.
Together, they notice a camping area poster near the alley, and they decide to release the fish there. On their way, they hear a child crying over a broken toy. The street performer gives the girl a balloon headband and encourages her to give it to the child. As the girl places the headband on the child, a gust of wind blows her hair back, revealing her scar. She quickly turns away, but the child is not afraid. Instead, the child gives her a hug, which marks the beginning of the girl’s newfound confidence as she experiences the kindness of others.
They reach the lakeside, where they release the fish. The girl turns back to look at the street performer, who has removed his makeup, and is surprised. Without explaining, the street performer hands her a hairpin, encouraging her to wear it. The girl smiles, no longer hiding her scar with her bangs, but bravely revealing her true self.
