Origami Whale: A Dream Woven in Paper and Space

Origami Whale: A Dream Woven in Paper and Space

How should abandoned factories that have lost their functionality exist?
Then, how should the technologies that were once closely related to our lives and drove regional growth change? From today, Shilin Paper Mill is reborn.
Description of the Work:
Shilin Paper Mill is the last remaining abandoned factory in the Shilin area, and it has lost its original function, retaining only its form. Many plans have been proposed to revitalize this idle land, with many focusing on cultural revival projects, which are easy to implement. However, in reality, the project has not been completed and has been repeatedly delayed. It is currently under construction and is becoming a representative idle space in the city center.

Here, I believe that while developing it into a cultural space is certainly good, the focus should be on the value that the factory originally embodied—“productivity.” We hope that by creating a site that not only takes the form but also functions as a “production” space, we can create a direction that can permeate the daily lives of local residents and continue to thrive.

Ultimately, the rebirth of Shilin Paper Mill should not only be a nostalgic return to the past, but also a transition from an old industrial site to modern innovation and production, blending history and the future to create a multi-functional space that is both local and modern. Such a transformation would make Shilin Paper Mill not just a building, but a vibrant, living community center, becoming an important part of the city's development.
